Orthopedic or Anatomical mattress?

Choosing a mattress is a process that requires special attention!

Although in recent years the ease of obtaining information from the internet has been a very easy process that has greatly benefited the decision-making process, when choosing a sleeping mattress this can confuse the consumer.

Orthopedic or Anatomical? is the most popular question. With bonnel springs, mini bonnel or independent (Pocket springs)? Maybe some quality without springs, such as 100% latex or coconut with latex? Which is the best?

  • There is no better or worse. All types of mattresses, if they are made correctly and with attention to the areas where each one suffers, are good! The issue is what the customer is really looking for and what is suitable for each person.

After nearly 40 years of being involved in the manufacture and sale of mattresses, customer feedback is what we constantly evaluate and gives us the answers to most of the above questions.

A brief encounter, lying on a mattress in the showroom of any company can be very misleading. In 75% of cases the customer is excited by the mattress with the softest and softest feeling, but this is not always the right mattress to choose. Below I will try to answer as much as I can through my experience that combines customer feedback and manufacturing knowledge on the mattress.

  • Orthopedic or Anatomical, what is each and who is best suited for it?

Orthopedic is the medium to hard mattress. It can also consist of bonnel & mini bonnel type springs but also of coconut or other solid materials in their medium to hard version. It offers good body support and is preferred more by customers with chronic back problems and with sedentary work that usually affects the natural posture of the body. This is because it does not let the body sink, but supports it properly by relaxing the muscles responsible for supporting the back and waist.

Anatomical is the medium to soft mattress. It can consist of independent springs (pocket springs), medium to soft foam materials or even latex in soft quality. Suitable for those who find rest in the natural position that the body takes without a support reaction from the mattress. Customers with diseases in the hips, thighs, etc. are usually satisfied with anatomical mattresses that do not exert pressure on these parts.

  • With springs or without?

The answer here is subjective. The feel of a spring mattress is diametrically opposed to a solid one. The bounce of springs versus the more "dry" behavior of solid mattresses is a personal choice for each person. In terms of durability over time, solid mattresses gain a little ground due to the absence of moving parts inside them.

  • Does body weight play a role?

Our weight affects the feeling we get from the mattress. Example: A mattress with independent springs is not as soft for a 65kg person compared to a 120kg person if it is made with exactly the same materials. The selection of materials is based on the average of 75~80kg. However, if the customer is significantly heavier or lighter than the average, appropriate changes should be made to get the desired feeling from each mattress.

  • I made the wrong hardness choice, can anything be done?

As I mentioned at the beginning of the article, most customers find a fluffy-soft mattress more appealing than a harder one in a short test. However, after 8 hours of sleep, some are dissatisfied with their choice. What I generally recommend is choosing a medium to hard mattress, which if proven wrong, can be easily corrected by adding a topper that is intended to provide a more anatomical feel. However, a soft mattress cannot easily change hardness unless it is deconstructed and internally reinforced.

  • Memory foam, Watergel, Latex, Horsehair, etc. Which material should we add and why?

Memory foam for the ultimate anatomical hugging sensation. Watergel for a pleasantly cool surface with good heat dissipation during sleep. Latex is one of the natural materials with very good recovery, fully breathable. The horsehair pad, a completely hydrophobic material with reports of benefits in rheumatism.

And somewhere here I will stop, hoping that I have helped and not confused more. I will be happy to answer your other questions, which you can send to info@naoussa-strom.gr.
